Technically March (month 11) hasn't started but I've made a cast of head that I created out of sculpy.  We'll see if this one goes anywhere or not...

I can offer up these hideously deformed casting experiment gone bad....

Fritz - Ouch!  So far I've been mostly healthy from customizing injuries.  However, every time I grab the dremel I think I'm about to loose my fingers.

Rest up those figures and get well soon.

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Dremel Tool - Questions/Comments
« on: February 26, 2006, 12:05 PM »
Trier posted a few pics of some Dremmel tools he's recently acquired.  It made me wonder what tips/attachments people use most commonly.

For drilling out / hollowing helmets and heads what is preferred, a drill bit type attachmenet (like Trier's photo) or an Aluminum Oxide grinding stone (sort of triangular shaped)?

I've used the AlumOxid grinder in the past with moderate sucess, but the wedge shaped tips sometimes causes problems.

Any other tips, tools, or dremmel tricks??

Phruby, I put my entries in a while ago... Do we need to bring them back up to the top of this thread or will you dig them all out?

I guess I forgot to comment on this latest round as well....

My favorite is the Rykrof in Rhen gear - very cool blend of imperial trooper parts.  Tylin and Bail both look nice considering that they are very basic customs (in terms of parts swapping).  They work very well.

Well, I've made some progress with my "newbie" casting attempts.  I've had some mixed sucess/failure.  I've been snapping pictures of my in progress but I'm too tired to get the uploaded, cropped, etc etc.  Maybe tomorrow I'll show off what I've got.

Updated on Sunday afternoon.....

Here are some photos of pieces that I've cast.

Captain Typho heads.  These are pretty much usuable "as is"

Alien head for upcoming challenge, he needs some basic clean-up and I need to cut away his sprew hole.

Beehive Clone Helmet - needs a little clean up.  I may sand it down and make a new mold using this.  I did the best I could making that helmet from sculpy.

and finally, some really really bad Rykrof heads  ??? :o ??? :o  Obviously these need some work.

Smartypants - thanks for the compliments.  I hadn't thought about the KOTOR angle but you are right.

Your Jedi General looks great.  I've been thinking of making a Jedi using the Ask Aak head - now I can see what he looks like.  I think the Bandolier is a simple but very effective touch.

So Hemble's secret for masterful painting is discovered.  He paints everything in shades of gray before adding the color.  Very nice.

In all seriousness.  Those look great.  I think that Yoda/Luke are amazing so far.

For the clone belt, I slice it off on the back with an X-acto knife.  There are very thin parts that connect the cannister part on the back of the belt.  You can cut it there and and easily glue it back with some superglue.  Thats what I did for this one:

As far as the neck post.  Try heating it up in boiling water, that softens the plastic up.  I use a box knife to cut the neck post on the #41s

Phruby, thats a great Snowbunny.  I still think she looks a little too angry but given the base figure you used, it looks great.  I think the cloak came out very nice.  Is that sculpy on the fur?

I really like the way the script writing came out on thse figures.  It is a very unique touch.

As a practice in casting and mold making, I may try my hands and making a Rykrof head.  If they turn out, I could probably offer some up for people to use.  BTW, isn't it great that we longer call this the Endor Soldier Head but the Rykrok head.  ;D

you could always do a really old Rykrof (assuming he lives that long) - here's what his dad looks like -

Looks like Rykrof's (pimp) daddy has the same sleeves as our boy.
